Cleaning Services

Welcome to the Services Page for Custodial Services. The department provides general services to campus buildings as well as special services under the classroom initiative program and its building service workers function.

General services

In addition to the information provided in this section, individual building schedules are available here.

Classrooms, Conference Rooms, Libraries, Computer Labs, Teaching Labs	Daily (Monday through Friday)	Clean chalk board, replenish supplies, empty trash, straighten chairs.
	Twice weekly	In addition to daily services, dust mop floors and wet mop when needed.
	Weekly	Vacuum carpeted classrooms. Dust horizontal surfaces.
	Semi-annually	Refinish floors

Laboratories	Daily (Monday through Friday)	Empty trash

	Monthly	Clean offices in laboratories (see above).

Public Space	Daily (Monday through Friday)	Dust mop floor, wet mop as needed. Vacuum carpets.

Stairways	Twice Weekly	Sweep, wet mop as needed.

Locker Rooms, Shower Areas	Daily	Clean and disinfect floors. Empty waste receptacles, clean water fountains.
	Weekly	Dust window sills and heat convectors.
	Intermittent	Scrub floors, walls, and ceilings as needed to remove soap film and lime build-up.

Gymnasiums, Handball Courts, Dance Studios	Daily	Dust mop floors, empty trash, clean drinking fountains.
	Weekly	Dust bleacher seating, window sills, heat convectors.
	Yearly	Refinish floors.

Recycling	Variable	Empty secondary containers, pick up broken down corrugated cardboard, pick up white paper, mixed paper, colored paper and newspaper. Take all items to main recycling area of building.

* Only permanently installed carpeting owned by the University will be vacuumed and shampooed. Personal carpeting and area rugs are not the responsibility of the Physical Plant Custodial Services department and will not be cleaned.

Special services

Classroom initiative

This initiative provides additional cleaning for heavily used classrooms in Berkey, Bessey, Eli Broad College of Business, Kedzie Hall, Natural Science and Wells Hall.

As permitted by class schedules:

Chalkboards are cleaned and supplies replenished.
Waste receptacles are emptied.
Debris is cleared and chairs are repositioned.
Window sills and heat convectors are dusted.
Window blinds are checked.
Spills are cleaned up.

Building service workers

This function provides the unlocking of all exterior doors of assigned buildings seven days a week as posted or scheduled. The building service workers also keep entrances clear, as possible, in inclement weather through campus. In addition, they will respond to emergencies such as spills resulting from accidents or sickness as certified.
